Presidential Greetings

Welcome to the Greater New Orleans Senior Olympics.  If you have not participated in any of the GNOSO events, you do not know what you have missed.  There are events for everyone, volleyball, bowling, art, dance, putt-putt, swing and bridge to name a few.  Please visit our website at GNOSO.net to see a list of all activities.  Then choose your event and come meet others who share your interests.

GNOSO is your organization, and your participation makes it great.  We had over 800 participants in our events in 2018 and look to have even more in the future.

Please come join us this year! I would like to thank all our volunteers and sponsors who make all of this possible!  I look forward to meeting all of you.

Jim Young,
GNOSO President

Female Athlete of the Year

Mary Charlet has been active in the GNOSO since 2007.  She started out participating in her favorite sport of bowling.  Later she started participating in shuffle board, winning numerous medals, and also participated in two National Senior Games.  In Albuquerque she took sixth place in the singles bowling event.

Mary, who is the owner of “The Four Columns” has graciously allowed us the use of her facility for our GNOSO banquet.  Mary is also a member of the Waggaman Golden Age Club where she holds the office of President.  She is always willing to offer a helping hand whenever she is able.

Congratulations Mary Charlet for a well deserved honor.

Male Athlete of the Year

Pat Ketcham is the Greater New Orleans Senior Olympics 2019 male selection for Olympian of the Year.  Pat started participating in Senior Olympics in 2010 when he joined a softball team.  In 2012 he also joined a beanbag baseball team and became active in the Nicholson Golden Agers.  He began participating in Darts, Horseshoes, Shuffleboard, Cabbage Ball and The Throws. As a member of the Nicholson Golden Age Club Pat participates in their intramural sports and serves as Dart Captain.  In 2017 he helped organize and continues to coordinate Beanbag Baseball intramurals for the eight Westbank Golden Age Clubs.  His team won the Gold Medal in the 2019 GNO tournament.  For the Jefferson Parish Beanbag Baseball Tournament, Pat organized three separate teams from Nicholson.

Besides helping to promote Senior Olympics by recruiting members and getting seniors involved, Pat also helps during the Games by scoring, placing and picking up equipment.  Pat volunteered at a Senior Olympic Presentation on the North Shore.

Congratulations Pat Ketcham for a well deserved honor.

Memorials

We have had several Senior Olympians that have passed away in the last 2 years.  In this column we would like to acknowledge their passing and let others know.  Of course we do not know of everyone, so if you do know of a Senior Olympian that is no longer with us please send the information to Lisa Schwalb at lschwalb@live.com.  I would also like to mention that memorial donations to the GNO Senior Olympics will be acknowledged in this column.
